NRA Certified Firearms Education

The Sheboygan Rifle and Pistol Club hosts NRA firearms education courses for the public. All instructors are NRA certified and overseen by a qualified NRA Training Counselor. Classes include:

Before taking the PPITH and PPOTH courses, registrants are required to take the NRA Basic Pistol Course or provide a NRA Basic Pistol completion certificate.

NRA Basic Pistol Course: May 11th

Courses with no Prerequisite Classes:

NRA First Steps Class

Short Description:
NRA First Steps is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper orientation to one specific firearm type for classes of four or fewer students.

Additional Details:
The course is at least three hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot a specific firearm and action type. This can be a rifle or handgun. Students will learn the NRA’s rules for safe gun handling, the firearms parts and operation, ammunition, shooting fundamental, cleaning the firearm and continued opportunities for skill advancement.

NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course

Short Description:
The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting is intended for all individuals regardless of previous shooting experience of and is available for delivery in two ways. One option is the traditional, instructor-led course where you will receive direct instruction from an NRA-certified instructor from beginning to end. The other option has two components, a self-study or “e-learning module” which is completed online in your own timeframe and a hands-on practical portion conducted in a classroom and shooting range with an instructor.

Additional Details:

Instructor Led Only Training:

The Instructor Led Only takes place in a traditional classroom and range environment. This course may be completed in a single day format or over several days with smaller blocks of instruction.

Blended training:

The blended training format provides students the flexibility to complete a significant portion of the course in an eLearning environment, prior to arriving at the classroom and range session with an NRA Certified Instructor.

Course topics include gun safety rules, proper operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, ammunition knowledge, pistol selection and storage, shooting fundamentals, pistol inspection and maintenance, marksmanship and shooting range safety. Students will complete live fire training and a nationally standardized shooting qualification while on the range with an NRA Certified Instructor.

WI DOJ Model Firearms Safety Course (CCW Class)

This course satisfies the education requirement for the State of WI's CCW Licensing.
This will be an intensive 4 hour course.

NRA Range Safety Officer

Short Description:
Develops NRA Certified Range Safety Officers with the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations.

Additional Details:
This course is nine hours long and is conducted in a classroom and at a shooting facility.
Range Safety Officer candidates will learn roles and responsibilities of an RSO: Range Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), range inspection, range rules, range briefings, emergency procedures, and firearm stoppages and malfunctions. Each Range Safety Officer Candidate will receive an RSO Student Study Guide, a Basic Firearm Training Program brochure, an NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure and a Course Evaluation form.

NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course

Short Description:
Teaches the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for the safe use of a rifle in target shooting.

Additional Details:
The course is at least 14 hours long and includes classroom and range time learning to shoot rifles. Students learn NRA rules for safe gun handling, rifle parts and operation, ammunition, shooting fundamentals, range rules, shooting from the bench rest, prone, sitting, standing and kneeling positions along with cleaning and continued opportunities for skill development.

NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course

Short Description:
Teaches the basic knowledge, skills and attitude for the safe and proper use of a shotgun in shooting a moving target.

Additional Details:
This course is at least ten hours long and includes classroom and range time learning how to shoot shotguns safely. Students learn NRA rules for safe fun handling, shotgun parts and operation, shotgun shell components, shotgun shell malfunction, shooting fundamentals, range rules, cleaning and continued opportunities for skill development.

NRA Basic Metallic Cartridge Reloading Course

Short Description:
Teaches beginning reloaders the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to safely reload metallic cartridges.

Additional Details:
This course is eight hours in length and is conducted in a classroom. Each student is taught reloading safety; centerfire cartridge components; using the reloading manual and reloading data; equipment; and the metallic cartridge reloading process. Students will receive the NRA Guide to Reloading handbook, the Basic Reloading Student Exam, a course completion certificate, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, a Basic Firearm Training Program brochure and a Course Evaluation form.

Women on Target

If you’re curious about firearms, whether for personal defense or to learn a new sport, Women On Target® is the perfect place to start. These instructional shooting clinics are designed to teach you firearm safety and the fundamentals of marksmanship, giving you the confidence you need to safely handle and operate a firearm upon completion.
Women On Target® clinics are available only to women — it’s a safe and friendly environment whether you’re picking up a gun for the very first time or are just brushing off some dust and need a little refresher. You’ll immediately feel at ease in the half- or full-day clinics, and will be provided with a hands-on, one-of-a-kind experience. No experience or equipment is necessary to participate.

Courses with Prerequisite or Required Documented Firearms Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:

These courses are for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable federal, state or local law, and experienced shooters (shooters able to show mastery of basic skills of safe fun handling, shooting a group, zeroing a firearm and cleaning the firearm). Prospective participants must demonstrate that they have the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes.

NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course (PPITH)

Short Description:
Teaches the basic knowledge, skills and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense.

Additional Details:

Additional prerequisite: This course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable federal, state or local law, and experienced shooters (shooters able to show mastery of basic skills of safe fun handling, shooting a group, zeroing a firearm and cleaning the firearm). Prospective participants can demonstrate that they have the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes by producing an NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA First Steps Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, military DD214 with pistol qualification or passing the Pre-course assessment.

This is an 8-hour course. Students should be expected to shoot 100 rounds of ammunition. Students will learn basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, firearms and the law, ow to choose a handgun for self-defense and continued opportunities for skill development.

NRA Basic Personal Protection Outside The Home Course (PPOTH)

Short Description:
Teaches students the knowledge, skills and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective and responsible use of a concealed pistol for self-defense outside the home.

Additional Details:
Additional prerequisite: This course is for adult individuals who are not disqualified from possessing a firearm as defined by applicable federal, state or local law and are of good repute and possess defensive pistol skills presented in the NRA PPOTH course. must also understand the basic legal concept relating to the use of firearms in self-defense and must know and observe not only federal gun safety rules but also those safety principles that are specific to defensive situations. Prospective participants can demonstrate that they have the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes by producing an NRA Basic PPITH Certificate, or by passing the pre-course evaluation.

The course is divided into 2 levels:

Level One

Level one is nine-hours and offers the essential knowledge and skills that must be mastered in order to carry, store and use a firearm safely and effectively for personal protection outside the home. Students spend several hours on the range and shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition during level one.

Level Two

Level two has an additional five hours of range time and approximately 115 rounds of ammunition are used learning advanced shooting skills.

Instructor Courses:

These courses are designed to teach qualified students to become instructors themselves in any of the disciplines listed above.

NRA Basic Instructor Training (BIT)

Short Description:
NRA Basic Instructor Training is designed to develop NRA certified Instructors who possess the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to conduct the NRA Basic Firearm Training Courses.

Additional Details:
This is the NRA class that helps people who already have subject matter expertise learn how to hold a class the NRA way so that their students earn recognized NRA certification. This course teaches you the policies and procedures for becoming an NRA Instructor as well as effective teaching methods for training students. Basic Instructor Training is a pre-requisite for all instructor level courses.

This course is the first step in being an instructor and those interested in teaching any NRA courses need receive further education available through our NRA Certified Training Counselor-the only level that can train trainers.

NRA Instructor Personal Protection In The Home Course (PPITH)

Short Description:

This 15-hour course teaches the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, promoting and teaching the NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home course.

Prerequisite:

Must be an NRA Certified Pistol Instructor. Prior to the course, candidates complete a pre-course questionnaire and demonstrate their firearm background in pre-course assessment exercises.

Additional Details:
Course is presented in two parts: basic instructor training and discipline specific instructor training. Students demonstrate organizational and teaching skills via participation in practical exercises during the course, and complete an instructor certification examination. Students will receive the NRA Trainer’s Guide, NRA Basics Of Personal Protection In The Home Instructor Candidate Packet, and NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home course student packet.

NRA Instructor Basics Of Personal Protection Outside The Home Course (PPOTH)

Short Description:

This 22-hour course teaches the knowledge, skills and attitude essential to organizing, promoting and teaching the NRA Basics of Personal Protection Outside The Home Course (PPOTH).

Prerequisite:

Instructor candidates must be both an NRA Certified Pistol and Personal Protection In The Home Instructor (PPITH). Candidates must have attended an NRA Basics Of Personal Protection Outside The Home (PPOTH) course and passed the student exam with a score of 90 percent or better.

Additional Details:
Course is presented in two parts: basic instructor training, and discipline specific instructor training. Students demonstrate organizational and teaching skills via participation in practical exercises during the course and complete an instructor certification examination. Students will receive the NRA Trainer’s Guide, NRA Basics Of Personal Protection Outside The Home Instructor Candidate Packet, and NRA Basics Of Personal Protection Outside The Home course student packet.
